He's standing, staring at the ground
Bouncing back and forth, he jumps around
Shakes out his limbs, takes deep breaths
His father on the right, opponent on the left
And he's struggling to fight
Trying to pin the other to the ground
He can't get a hold
With all the lights and sounds
Of the managers cheering
His coaches yelling
The whir of the cameras all around
He hears himself grunt
He's on the ground
But he's up in a flash, he doesn't get pinned
The girls are screaming like number one fans
"Two point, take down red!"
"We didn't see that!"
Too many voices in his head
Of his father and the others
Of his own
Of the Lord's
And he prays he can make it in over time
That shouldn't have been
And he should been done
Yet he didn't win.

Author's Comments

Just got back from state here in Georgia. This is for Daniel Helena, 140. It's a basic rehash of what went down and closure for my own therapeutic needs.
